Looking for small bedroom decorating ideas? You’ve come to the right place! When you have a small bedroom in your house or apartment, it can be difficult to figure out what to do. In such a small space, how could it ever be stylish? A lot of people give up trying, and settle for a bed and a small end table. For a lot of people, it’s just a place to sleep. However, with more people staying home than ever before, your bedroom may be both an office and a sleeping space. Not only is it possible to decorate a small bedroom, but there are actually so many ways to achieve a cozy, stylish space on any budget.

40. Transform a Bed Into a Playhouse

A lot of parents dream of making a big, luxurious playhouse for their kids in the backyard. But you don’t always have the land or budget available to do that. So if your children are in a small bedroom, why not consider giving them a playhouse bed? This is like killing two birds with one stone, and it is significantly more affordable than an outdoor playhouse. Typically, a playhouse bed will cost a few hundred dollars, versus spending a few thousand dollars on a structure that goes outside. On top of that, you don’t have to worry about what will happen when the kids grow up. It’s a lot easier to pass on furniture that cost $500 versus a backyard playhouse that cost $5,000.

Many of these playhouse beds are also a bunk bed. This makes it easy to fit two kids into a relatively small space. When you have two kids sharing a small bedroom, that alone is a nightmare. But if they can have fun while they’re in there, it won’t matter if it feels cramped. This is also helpful when decorating a small bedroom, because you can base the rest of the decor off of the theme of the bed. For example, if the playhouse bed looks like a car, you could choose a racing theme for the rest of the room. A castle bed could be a princess palace, and so much more.

39. Find a Small Desk For The Bedroom

Now that more people are working from home, many bedrooms have transformed into a home office. The biggest issue that people are running into is trying to make it work in a tight space. This is one of the many reasons why so many people have decided to move out of small apartments, and buy a house. But not everyone is lucky enough to be able to do that right now.

So obviously, if you’re looking for small bedroom decorating ideas, you’re also keeping in mind that you need a desk to fit that space. Here at Home Addict, we already have a full list of small desks that you can look through. As time goes on, many retailers have begun to offer small desks for a bedroom. Check out places like Staples, Walmart, Ikea, and Target. These all have options in the $50 to $100 range that should work for nearly any situation.

38. Make a Creative Mural on Your Accent Wall

One of the best small bedroom decorating ideas is to create an accent wall. It’s amazing for you to have a beautiful piece of art to look at when you first walk into a room. A lot of people will just choose a solid paint color for their accent wall. However, it’s a lot of fun when you’re decorating a small bedroom to actually go above and beyond. It doesn’t matter if the room is the size of a closet. If you walk in and see an accent wall like the photo above, the immediate reaction is always going to be “wow!”

If you have some artistic talent, go ahead and paint something on the wall. Most people create a mural that has something to do with the theme they are going after. Obviously, this would take hours and possibly days to complete. If you’re intrigued by that idea, and looking for inspiration, check out the video by a YouTuber called Ten Hundred. He paints a mural on the wall of his basement. But if you’re not that talented at art, there are a lot of stencils out there that you could use instead. There are also plenty of wall decals and stickers available to buy online.

37. Add Storage Under the Bed

When you have a small bedroom, it’s really difficult to fit everything in the space. Most likely, you might not have room for an extra dresser, or the closet might be very small. It only makes sense to have more storage underneath your bed. Sometimes, all it takes is having some baskets or plastic containers that you can slide in and out of the bed.

If your bed is low to the ground, you may need to put the legs on risers. But if you can afford to buy a new bed, you might want to consider buying something that has built-in storage capacity. There are even beds that lift up to reveal a storage container underneath. Others have drawers that are built into the bed frame.

36. In a Small Master Bedroom, Lean Into The Styling

When a lot of people find that their new house or apartment has a small bedroom, they tend to lean towards the minimalist side. While there is nothing wrong with minimalism, there are still plenty of small bedroom decorating ideas that you can implement to your master bedroom. Before you get started, find some inspiration on places like Pinterest and decide what style you gravitate towards the most.

Once you have a good idea of your design aesthetic, figure out a way that you can incorporate that into a small room. Remember that you don’t have to have every single item that you see in a photograph in order to get that style. Pay attention to the colors, trim on the walls, artwork, and fabrics that they may use in the room. You might be able to replicate all of this on a budget by finding similar items in your local discount retailers.

35. Consider Buying a Small Couch for the Bedroom

When most people think about a bedroom with a couch in it, they imagine a luxury hotel. Or, they assume that your room has to be huge in order to fit a couch in it. Admittedly, it’s best if you keep the couches out of your bedroom if you have a tiny space. However, it is possible to find a small couch for a bedroom. Instead of thinking along the lines of a couch that you would find in the living room, think about all of the options that are out there.

You would be surprised how often a couch can fit into a bedroom. Credit: Shutterstock

I’ve had a few couches in my bedroom over the years. The first was a loveseat, which is only big enough to fit two people. But this really came in handy when people would come into the room to just have a chat. Now, I have a bedroom couch made out of rattan. This fits the bohemian aesthetic that I’m going for, and it’s a lot smaller than a traditional couch. You can also consider a chaise lounge or a bench instead.

34. Don’t Stick to Just One Wall Color

Most people will paint a room one solid color. While there is nothing wrong with that, a small bedroom tends to get boring when you just stick to one color palette. If at all possible, consider painting one accent wall. The color is entirely up to you. I have seen some people paint the back wall behind their bed black, because it makes the room feel more cozy and helps to dampen the mood at night.

Notice how the contrast of the two wall colors helps the room feel bigger. Credit: Shutterstock

As a rule of thumb, darker colors tend to make a room feel smaller while lighter colors help them feel bigger. So keep that in mind when you are choosing your color palette. However, in the example I just gave about the black accent wall, having just one wall of a darker color didn’t make the room feel too small. But if the entire room was black, it would feel like the walls are closing in on you.

33. Paint the Ceiling Like the Night Sky

For centuries, people have been painting the sky on their ceiling. In France, it was common for many chapels to paint their ceiling with stars or even have all of the astrological signs of the night sky. Many visitors who saw this would try to replicate the ceiling in their own homes. It also became popular for Paris apartments to be painted like the night sky as well, and it carried over to other parts of the world.

In modern times, people have copied this in the number of ways. You might have been one of the many kids who experienced pacing glow-in-the-dark stars on their ceiling. But you could go one step further by making the ceiling look like a light blue with puffy clouds. Or, you can make it look like the night sky. Obviously, this would take a long time to actually do the paint job, and you would need some sort of artistic ability. It might be easier to place decals on the ceiling instead.

32. Fairy Lights For a Cozy Ambiance

One of the most common elements that you see in a small bedroom for teenagers and college students is to have fairy lights. This helps to give the room a really cozy ambiance that helps to make the space feel magical. Lights remind us of Christmas time, which is always cozy and comforting. So pretty much everyone loves walking into a dimly lit room to see white lights.

The great thing about fairy lights is that you can buy them at the dollar store. It doesn’t have to be expensive for you to give the room an ambient glow. However, instead of finding the green corded lights at Christmas time, try to find something that blends in with your decor. They also make plenty of lights in different shapes and sizes, so there is always going to be something that would fit your style.

31. Plants

As a rule of thumb, plants always make a room feel more alive. Putting plants in a small space helps bring the magic of nature inside. You can almost feel the spirit of the plant similar to having a pet in your home. And if you want to bring that same feeling into your bedroom, this can be a great way to decorate your small bedroom space.

However, keep in mind that plants need plenty of sunlight. If you live in an apartment where the bedroom doesn’t get much sunlight at all, it’s best for you to keep your plants somewhere they are likely to survive. Fake plants can still give you a lot of style. It’s also a lot more convenient for anyone who travels often, or who doesn’t have a green thumb.

30. Wood Accent Wall

Years ago, it was common for people to live in log cabins or to have shiplap walls. Over time, a lot of people hated this because it made them feel like they were stuck inside of a wooden box. So as a society, we transitioned into hanging drywall and having smooth walls where we don’t have to think about the wood that’s holding the wall underneath. However, over time, wood walls have come back into fashion.

You can actually buy reclaimed wood tiles online that you can place on top of your wall. This can even be done in an apartment, because you can disassemble the wall when you’re ready to leave. Obviously, this is going to be a lot of work for you to put up the accent wall and take it down when your lease is over. However, for those who’ve actually gone the extra mile to create an accent wall in a small bedroom, the decorating idea has paid off in a big way.

29. Tapestry

For thousands of years, human beings have loved using tapestries in their homes and places of worship. A long time ago, having a tapestry in your home was a sign of wealth, and they were typically only found in castles. In case you don’t know, a tapestry is a piece of fabric with an image on it. Years ago, people would need to crochet images on a tapestry by hand. While these kinds of tapestries still exist, it’s a lot more affordable to find one that’s simply has an image printed on the fabric. Tapestries are popular in dorm rooms and apartments owned by people in their early 20s.

When you live in a dorm, the walls are often made of cinder block. This is a really easy way to cover up an unattractive wall. It’s difficult to hang paintings, because you can’t actually drill into the cement. So the tapestry is lightweight, and you can use tape or command hooks to drape it up against the wall. Even if you live in a house with drywall, a tapestry can still be very cool. Some people have even used tapestries that look like a background in order to give the illusion of depth in a room. For example, there are tapestries that look like libraries or bookshelves. By hanging this behind your bed, you give the illusion that there is a built-in bookshelf behind it.

28. Photo Gallery Wall

When people are decorating a small bedroom, they often make the mistake of only putting one piece of art on the wall. They assume that since the room is so small, they can’t really fit a lot of artwork in the space. However, even if the bedroom is small, the wall is still going to be large enough to fit more than one piece of art. A gallery wall is a great way to make the room feel bigger but also give you a lot to look at. And feng shui, they say that you shouldn’t put family photos in the bedroom. However, in the western world, we encourage each other to do whatever we want.

If you have your desk in the bedroom, a gallery wall can help designate the space. Credit: Shutterstock

A gallery wall doesn’t have to just be your family photos. It can be artwork that you have collected over the years, as well as images that inspire you. Some people will even hang objects on the wall and call it art. And if you were into anything like taxidermy, this can also be blended into a gallery wall. Search Pinterest for inspiration on gallery walls, and you’re sure to find some thing that you like.

27. Mirror Helps to Make the Space Bigger

One of the best small bedroom decorating ideas is to add mirrors to the space. Mirrors will reflect the room, which gives the illusion that the space is bigger than it actually is. Some people choose to hang a mirror on the wall, but that’s not always necessary. Floor mirrors work just as well. Obviously, mirrors help you get ready in the morning, too. It’s much easier to know if your outfit looks good if you can see yourself head-to-toe.

Mirrors don’t just help with bedrooms, either. This is a common optical illusion people use for any room in their house or apartment. However, just be mindful about where you place your mirrors in your house. Mirrors on the closet doors, for example, are considered bad feng shui. And unless you’re feeling bold, you might not want to have a huge mirror reflecting your bed, anyway.

26. Built-In Shelving

When you’re decorating and organizing a small bedroom, it’s hard to figure out where you’re going to store everything. Adding extra furniture to the room immediately takes away square footage. If at all possible, try to incorporate some sort of built-in shelving that is directly against the wall.

There is also the option to buy a bed frame that comes with built-in shelving, too. A bed like this makes it a lot more convenient to store your items. When you have a piece of furniture like this, it’s like having two pieces in one. This leaves a lot of extra space in the rest of the room for whatever else needs to be there.

25. Elevate the Bed

One of the most common small bedroom decorating ideas that you will see around the internet is to elevate the bed off the ground. This works for a lot of reasons. When you create space underneath the bed, you immediately give yourself a place for storage that wasn’t there before. This can be achieved by building a platform, or putting your bed on risers to give extra inches underneath the bed.

A lot of people will go one step further and create a loft bed, or build a bunk bed with a desk underneath. This is a great way to take advantage of vertical space and store things in a room without a lot of square footage.

24. Avoid Bedspreads With a Large Print

When you’re searching for a new blanket or bedspread, you might want to skip the bold prints. Making a small bedroom feel bigger has a lot to do with optical illusions that you can play on the eye. Unfortunately, big prints on fabric take up so much space on the bedding that it actually makes your room feel even smaller.

Avoid bedspreads like when went decorating a small bedroom

Because of this, it would be a good idea for you to stick with small prints. Or, simply choose a bedspread or comforter that is a solid color. A good choice might be to go with simple polka dots or florals, if you’re going to use prints at all.

23. Use a Smaller Bed

When you are trying to decorate a small bedroom, One of the most obvious things you can do is to buy a smaller bed. Some people even go to the extent of purchasing a daybed that looks almost like a couch. This would work if you were decorating a small bedroom for a child. They don’t need to sleep in a bed that is much larger than them. Let them buy a larger bed when they grow up and they’re ready to move on.

In college dorms, students have a size bed called a “twin extra long”. This is a bird that is skinnier like a twin size bed meant for a child, but it is longer to accommodate a tall person. Even though this isn’t as luxurious and comfortable as having a full, queen, or king size bed, it might be the best option if you’re in a small bedroom space.

22. Floating Shelves

In a small bedroom, funding space to store your items is a huge issue. Without a lot of floor space or closet depth, your only option is probably to go upwards. This is were floating shelves come in. You can buy floating shelves and brackets from any hardware store like Home Depot, Lowes card. They also sell these supplies at places like Target, Walmart, and Amazon. For roughly $10 per shelf, you should be able to create several shelves on the wall to store your objects. This can be a great place for you to put your books, knickknacks, or plants.

When I was a kid, my brother and I shared the smallest bedroom in the house while my dad renovated the rest of the home. They hung a large floating bookshelf along the perimeter of the ceiling. This contains our collection of childhood books that we were given by family, friends, and inherited from neighbors. It was important to my parents for us to have books to read. But we didn’t have a lot of space for it in the bedroom. The shelf was very sturdy, and it is still there to this day.

21. Use Light Colored Bedding

Earlier on this list, we already talked about how large prints in bedding can make a room feel smaller. Sometimes it makes more sense to have a solid color, instead. If you have artwork on or a mural on the wall, the solid color often works with the other pieces in the room, as well. And like we have mentioned on other bullet points, lighter colors help make a room feel bigger.

One of the most popular options that I’ve seen in small bedrooms is to go for a plain white comforter. If you’re on a small budget, you might be able to get away with using a plain white duvet from IKEA without a cover. This helps to make your bedroom look bigger. It also helps to make your room look more like a hotel. I personally bought a luxurious white goose feather comforter a couple years ago. It’s very warm, but admittedly, it gets dirty easily, and it’s difficult to clean.

19. Bunk Beds Take Advantage of Vertical Space

If you’re decorating a small bedroom for your kids, it might make sense to have a bunk bed. After all, having two twin beds in a room on either side of the wall takes up a lot more square footage than simply having a bunk bed. Obviously, the bunk bed will take up vertical space instead of horizontal. This leaves a lot of room open on the other side of the room.

Now that a lot of kids are homeschooled or have some form of hybrid schooling, it might make sense to transition to a bunk bed. The other side of the room could have their school desks. Alternatively, You could choose an elevated bunk bed that has a desk underneath, instead of the second bed. This style of bed is popular even up through teenage and college years. (As long as your kids aren’t afraid of heights.)

18. Make the Room Feel Happy

One of the best ways to decorate a small bedroom is to simply make it feel happy. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how big or small the room is. It matters so much more how you feel when you walk in. There are a lot of ways to make a room feel happy. Make sure that there is some sort of sunlight coming into the room. Light, bright colors help to open the eye and make you feel light. Hanging artwork that you enjoy, or anything else that makes you happy makes a big difference.

No matter what size your room is, it’s possible to make it happy. Credit: Shutterstock

When your bedroom feels happy, it immediately becomes an oasis for you. You could have had a really difficult day. But once you walk through your bedroom door, you know that you can relax. I personally try to make my bedroom and living space very happy. And I’ve had a lot of people tell me that it may need them to gravitate towards wanting to spend more time in my room. This really does work, so try to make it as happy as possible.

17. Install Sconces

When you are decorating a small bedroom, there isn’t a lot of space for you to have floor lamps. So it only makes sense to install wall sconces. These are lights that flank both sides of the bed. Not only does it work in a small space, but it’s also popular even in large bedrooms. There are a lot of different wall sconces out there, and not all of them have to be put directly into the wall. There are even hanging lights and sconces that you can plug into the wall without actually changing the electrical wiring inside of your walls.

This bedroom has both wall sconces and a padded wall. Credit: Shutterstock

Having wall sconces is also very convenient. If you like to read books at night before you go to sleep, it’s a lot easier to lean over and turn off the light, instead of getting out of bed to flip the light switch. It can also help to calm you down at night. A large overhead light fixture might be too bright at night, which will keep you awake much longer than dim light coming from sconces.

Make some plans on how you would change the layout of a room. Credit: Shutterstock

16. Change the Layout

Sometimes, a bedroom only feels small because of the layout. Sometimes, all it takes is to move your furniture around in order to help make it feel bigger. Before you get started, it may be a good idea to measure the square footage of your room. Once you know how big the space is, you can create a sketch of the room. Play around with possibilities of how you can change the layout. You could also use programs like Sketch Up to do this on the computer.

It’s always good to sketch out a new bedroom idea before executing. Credit: Shutterstock

Like many people, living circumstances change during the pandemic. My brother was supposed to go to San Francisco in 2020, but he moved back into his childhood bedroom in New Jersey. In order to make this work, he completely changed the layout of the small bedroom. Instead of having a full size bed in the middle of the room, he put a twin bed up against the wall. And instead of having bookshelves in the room, he placed them in the closet. Now, he has plenty of space for his TV and desk, despite it being a small bedroom. He was able to achieve all of this without buying any new furniture at all. In fact, he got rid of a lot of things that were in the room in order to make this work.

For beds in the corner, a headboard isn’t a good option. Credit: Shutterstock

15. Skip the Headboard

For some people, the idea of skipping a headboard seems like a terrible idea. After all, the headboard gives a lot of style to space. However, when you’re trying to decorate a small bedroom, it can sometimes be difficult to make a headboard work. This is especially true if you need to put a bed into the corner of the room. It won’t make sense to actually have a headboard in that situation. So instead of trying to figure out how you’re going to make a headboard work in a tiny space, just skip it completely.

If you get rid of the headboard, you have more space. Credit: Shutterstock

Years ago, a headboard was used to block a draft while you slept. In modern insulated houses, we don’t really need a headboard for its original purpose anyway. It has evolved into something that is purely decorative. But if the back of your bed still looks bare, you can always hang a piece of artwork instead. Just make sure that it is light enough so that if it were to fall in the middle of the night, you’re not going to give yourself a concussion.

14. Paint Everything White

When it comes to decorating a small space, one of the biggest tips that everyone knows is to keep the colors light. There are a lot of small bedrooms out there where the owner decides to make everything white. Some people even go as far as to paint the hardwood floors white too. After the base has been painted white, you can add colors on top of it with the furniture and accessories. This makes a room feel a lot bigger than having dark walls and dark furniture.

Almost everything in this room is white. Credit: Shutterstock

For some people, the idea of painting a room white is way too drastic. They believe that it takes away from personalizing the room, or that it’s too boring. If that’s the case, you might want to choose a light color instead. Pastel paints are beautiful, and they are reminiscent of the English cottage look. Just remember that paint always gets darker as time goes on. For example, I painted my bedroom a light lavender color. A few years later, the room had become such a dark purple that it felt suffocating. I ended up painting it a white cream color. this ended up being the right choice. Not only does it feel bigger and brighter, but it also gives me a lot more freedom to have colorful objects in the room without worrying that it clashes with the walls.

13. Create Custom Built-Ins

Not every room is going to have the option to push a bed into a custom built in, but if you have the ability to do it, you should really consider it. For example, some people will take an existing closet space and use it as a built-in for their bed instead. This works if you already have a dresser where you put your clothing. The only downside to this is that you might feel claustrophobic when you wake up in the morning.

These built-in cabinets and desk help give additional storage in a small bedroom. Credit: Shutterstock

Obviously, this suggestion would be very expensive if the room didn’t already have the capacity to use a built-in space. With that being said, there are some people that will actually construct a wall where they have a built-in molding to give the room some drama. This is far more interesting than looking at a blank wall. And when you purchase a house that doesn’t have a lot of space to begin with, it’s difficult to figure out how to make a small bedroom look stylish. Some people see this as a solution that is worth the amount of money they put into it.

12. Layer Your Linens

One of the most common tricks that you can use to make a small place feel bigger is to layer your linens. It’s difficult to explain how and why this works. But if you have a bed with multiple blankets laying on top of it, it somehow helps the room look bigger compared to a bed that has just one blanket.

Layer linens are always a good idea when decorating a small bedroom. Credit: Shutterstock

Throw blankets are affordable to purchase almost any store. If you want it to look stylish, I recommend checking out websites like Anthropologie and then trying to find a cheaper dupe for that look. There are a lot of DIY tutorials out there that will teach you how to make blankets that look more expensive than they actually are. If you have just one or two of these blankets in your life, it can make a small bedroom look way more luxurious than an actual is.

11. Buy Fold-Up Furniture and Accessories

If you’re trying to decorate a small bedroom, one of the best tactics might be to find fold up furniture and accessories. For example, there are a lot of end tables that fold up and can be put away. Same goes with card tables, chairs, and so much more. When you have furniture that can be folded away, it becomes very easy and light to pick them up and move them whenever you need to. And they can often be talked away into a closet space.

Fold-up end tables are great for getting out of the way when you need to. Credit: Shutterstock

For example, my grandmother had a very small cottage near the ocean. And her guest room, the space was so tiny that you barely had enough room to walk around the bed. She had a director style chair that folded up. The chair was a place for you to put your suitcase, or sit if you needed to. It was sitting in front of the window, which got in the way if you needed to use that space. But it was easy enough to pick up the chair, fold it in half, and move when you needed to. This was a lot more logical than buying an actual piece of furniture that you wouldn’t be able to easily move from one area of the room to the other.

10. Put Everything on the Floor

When all else fails, just put everything on the floor. In Japanese homes, people sleep on the floor all the time. They will even roll out tatami mats when it’s time to sleep and put them away in a closet when they want to use the room for other things. This helps to make the room feel bigger in the daytime when you’re awake. It also ensures that the room never gets dusty. If you’re putting your bed away every night, there is no chance for dust bunnies to accumulate underneath the bed.

Having your bed on the floor is actually sort of convenient. Credit: Shutterstock

I can personally speak to sleeping on the floor, because I spent a few years having my bed on the floor after my bed frame fell apart and I was too broke to buy anything else. Having your bed on the floor helps make the room feel bigger, and gives you a lot more vertical space. There are definitely a lot of pros and cons to this lifestyle. It was perfect for what I needed at the time, and it made it a lot easier to move things when I need it too. However, there are plenty of people who need to step out of bed instead of launching themselves or rolling out onto the floor every morning.

Some bedroom layouts need a bed against a window. Credit: Shutterstock

9. Put the Bed Against the Window (Even Though It’s Bad Feng Shui)

In feng shui, they say that you should never put your bed up against the wall, because they believe that your energy will be zapped out the window. Whether you believe it or not, this really could deplete your energy if the window has a draft. However, despite the fact that it’s bad feng shui, you can’t deny the fact that there are some bedrooms where it would make the most sense for you to just put the bed up against the window.

Even though it’s bad feng shui, your only option might be to put a bed against a window. Credit: Shutterstock

In certain bedrooms, having a bed up against the window actually works out for a number reasons. It could be the center of the room, and the only space where it’s possible for you to have room to walk on either side of the bed. Remember that it’s much better to give both sides of the bed space for each person to get in and out of the bed. And in the summertime, it might feel good to open the window and have a nice breeze blowing on your face to keep you cool.

8. Let Your Kids Pick the Colors

If you’re looking for small bedroom decorating ideas because you’re helping to create a room for your children, ask them for input. Your kids are most likely going to have a favorite color, character, or theme that they are hoping for. As the parent, you might want every room to look stylish and match the rest of your house. However, your kids are only young once. They are much more likely to look back with fond memories if they had some kind of input in decorating the room.

A great example of how to do this right is interior designer Nathan Berkus and his husband Jeremiah Brent. On their Architectural Digest house tour, you can see that they allowed their daughter Poppy to pick out her colors, wallpaper, and fabric that she wanted. At first, they didn’t know what to do, because they thought it was so drastically different than any of their interior design projects. There was so much pink, they thought it would be too much. However, it ended up being amazing. And since they helped their daughter with the design, it still looks like something out of a magazine. It’s totally possible for you to let your kids have their say in what they want, and still make it stylish.

7. Incorporate the Kid’s Play Room

There are some parents out there who are determined to give their kids an entire playroom outside of their bedroom. So they might transform an extra dining room or basement space into the toy room. This is very generous of parents, and it comes from a place of love. But it often creates a lot of mess and chaos. And unfortunately, a lot of those toys and activities end up going untouched. If you were limited on space, it’s actually much better to keep your kids toys in their bedroom. You can create designated play areas in the room so that it feels like it is a play room and a bedroom in one.

When I was a kid, my mom made it a strict rule that we needed to keep our toys in our bedrooms. The rest of the house was her domain. Even without a designated play room, we still ended up with tons of toys and video games. My parents didn’t make a lot of money, but they received a lot of secondhand toys from friends, family, neighbors and thrift stores. We always had plenty to play with, and we almost never felt like we were doing without.

6. Use Symmetry Whenever Possible

Human beings are attracted to symmetry. In fact, there have been multiple scientific studies that prove it. Whether we’re looking at symmetrical faces, spaces, or aspects of nature, or brains simply like to see things that are well-balanced. So if you walk into a small bedroom and you feel like something is just not right, it’s most likely because there isn’t any symmetry in the room.

The easiest way to create symmetry in a small bedroom is by putting the bed somewhere that has an equal amount of space on both sides. Next, add side tables to either side of the bed. Make sure they match, and that they are both the same size. You can also add two pieces of artwork, or two wall sconces on either side of the bed to create symmetry as well. Keep in mind that you don’t have to go overboard and spend a lot of money on this kind of project. Doing one or two things should be enough.

5. Have Less Furniture in the Room (Even if it’s Bigger)

One of the biggest mistakes that I see people make in their bedrooms is by having too much furniture. If they have a small closet, they immediately think that they need an extra dresser to fit all of their clothes. And if there are two people sharing the room, it means that they have two small dressers. The list goes on and on. These small pieces of furniture end up cluttering a room, and it can be a huge disaster.

If you want a small bedroom to feel bigger, it makes more sense to have larger furniture and fewer pieces. For example, if you can figure out a wardrobe system for you and your partner to share in one larger piece of furniture, it might actually take up less square footage than having two dressers in the room.

4. Consider a Padded Wall Instead of a Headboard

For some people, the suggestion of having a padded wall in the room makes them think about One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. But in reality, a padded wall is actually something that you see in a lot of luxury hotels. Years ago, royalty covered their walls in fabric. This was seen as being far more luxurious than having wallpaper.

Whenever you walk into a room with a padded wall, the immediate reaction everyone has is to say, “Wow”. However, this is going to be expensive, because it’s often something that often needs to be customized to fit the size of the room. But if you’re feeling crafty, and you trust in your own DIY skills, you may be able to create a padded wall of your own. They also sell peel and stick upholstered wall panels online, which is the most affordable option.

3. Floor Length Curtains

One of the best tricks that you can use to elongate any space is by using floor length curtains. This works in any room in the house, but it obviously can also be a great idea for decorating a small bedroom. Instead of buying curtains that only cover the size of your window, find something that goes all the way to the floor.

If you’re looking for inspiration, you can always find it on Pinterest. But one of the best examples I’ve seen of using curtain length to your advantage is on the Lone Fox YouTube channel. When he gave his apartment bedroom a makeover, he decided to go one step further and hang his curtains above the window frame, near the ceiling. Even when the room was totally empty, the curtains alone made a huge difference in how big the room felt before and after.

2. Choose Artwork That Pops

When you are designing a room, it’s important to pick the right artwork. Art should always reflect the owner of the house. And when it comes to the bedroom, there is so much that you can do to show the interests of the individual person. When you’re decorating a small bedroom, it’s important to have artwork that pops. In some cases, that means having something that’s bright, colorful, and eye catching.

But it doesn’t always have to be colorful. Black and white artwork also works incredibly well. This is especially true if you can find an amazing and striking black and white photograph. And you can see in the photo above that this black painting is very cool, too. If you’re on a tight budget, consider making your own artwork. Remember that it doesn’t have to be expensive to be cool!

1. Mount the TV on the Wall

If you believe in Feng Shui, then you might be a proponent of never putting a TV in your bedroom to begin with. However, if you’re the type of person who likes to cuddle in bed with Netflix, you’re going to want a TV in your room. The obvious move to save space would be to mount your TV on the wall. This can be accomplished with around $20, and the help of a friend.

Once your TV is mounted on the wall, you are immediately clearing up the floor space. It also eliminates the need for extra furniture, like a TV stand. There are even TVs out there like the Samsung Frame that are made to look like artwork when you’re not watching a show. The only downside to this is that if you’re renting an apartment, you may have to get permission from your landlord. And if the mount causes damage, you will have to patch the wall when you’re reading to move out.
