From Wine Cellar to Home Gym

Drinking can be fun, and it helps alleviate stress at the end of a long day. But for a lot of people, drinking is very unhealthy for their body. And there are a lot of people where drinking becomes an addiction. So it’s a real inspiration to see how this person quit drinking and decided to turn their fancy wine cellar into a basement gym. Considering how expensive that wine cellar must have been in the first place, this would have been a huge deal. Congratulations to this person for having the strength to put their health first. This is a much better use of their space, even if it does hurt a little bit to see a beautiful wine cellar get destroyed.

Workout With a View

When you go to a regular gym, you never think about having a good view. In fact, you’re pretty much forced to look at sweaty people that you are surrounded by. For the most part, many people are trying to look at my phone, or the screens if they are available on the machines they’re working out on. But this person has a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean from their home. so it makes sense that they would take advantage of the view in their garage home gym. It must be amazing to wake up in the morning watching the sunrise as you have a healthy start to the day.

Epic Garage Conversion

There are so many people out there who have a messy garage. Many of you out there can probably relate to some of the early pictures in the photo gallery of this Reddit post. The garage was filled with garbage and boxes of things that the homeowner probably didn’t even need. They decided to clear out the garage and completely transform it into a home gym. And the results are spectacular. Now, they have a place to work out. It is a much better use of that square footage. If you want to see all of the photos of this garage transformation, check out the photo gallery on the original Reddit post.

Stylish Gym

Most gyms are very similar in terms of their design. They have plain walls, or might just be cement blocks, depending on where you go. And even in these fancy conversion photos on this list, you won’t see a lot of style added to a home gym. Most people care about the functionality, rather than how cute it is. But this person really elevated the look of their workout space. They added wood paneling to the walls, and a green plant wall as well. It makes this space look like it totally belongs on Instagram. There isn’t a lot of work out equipment here, but they have the bare essentials of what they need to get their workout done.

Backyard Shed Gym

A lot of people out there do not have a garage or basement where they could place a gym. So this was a great idea from someone who decided to buy a backyard shed kit and turn it into a small home gym. These kits cost anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 depending on the square footage. Sometimes, you can get lucky at the end of the season and find a great sale on the display sheds that are left behind in parking lots of Home Depot and Lowe’s. Aside from the shell of the shed, you would also have to pay for extras like air conditioning and electricity, if that was something that you cared about. Considering that it gets very hot when you work out, you probably would want to have some sort of ventilation system to keep the shed cool.

Elaborate Basement Gym

Taken out of context, many would have seen these photos and assumed that this was some kind of luxury gym in a city like Los Angeles. But no. This is someone’s basement transformation. We love how the walls are black and that it also has beautiful paneling to elevate the look of the space. Most people don’t care enough to put that level of detail into a space that is just going to be used for working out. That’s great, because whenever they move out of that house, it’s going to be very appealing to future buyers. If you look at the original Reddit post, there is an entire image gallery with more photos of this space. They even went as far as to get custom anime art made on some of their weights. Many people who would swoon over this particular gym.

From 3 Car Garage to Stylish Workout Space

There are plenty of people out there who love the idea of having a three-car garage. In fact, in our McMansion Hell article, there are some people who will literally build a house from the ground up with a massive garage to fit their car collection. Even if it means sacrificing the size of their house just to fit their vehicles. So kudos to this person who had the idea to convert their three-car garage into a beautiful home workout space. Clearly, they care more about being healthy than their car. The hexagonal lights on the ceiling are amazing, and it makes the entire room sort of look like something out of Tron or Blade Runner.

Basement Conversion

A lot of people convert their basement into a gym because it is one of the few places in their home that isn’t necessary for everyday living. But this one in particular looks amazing. They really did a good job with the styling of the space. and they have so much variety in their gym equipment. So you can really get an all-around workout with everything in the space. It must have cost them a small fortune to buy everything in this room. This seems like it would be at least $10,000 worth of machines. But this is just a rough estimate. A lot of people would be very happy to have this in their home.

Simple Shed Gym Conversion

Here is yet another shed conversion that someone is using for their home gym. This summer home style structure is 10 ft by 10 ft. My only issue with this setup is the fact that they did not bother to add any drywall or insulation to the building. There doesn’t seem to be any air conditioning or way to ventilate the space other than opening the two front windows. This means that they can really only work out there when the weather is nice. This defeats the purpose of having a home gym. Because when the weather is nice, many people like to do outdoor activities. Working out at the gym is mostly during bad weather. So while it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, hopefully this person gets a lot of use out of it.

A 15 Year Old’s Outdoor Setup

Most 15 year olds wouldn’t be thinking about buying a bench press. But this kid clearly cares about his physique from an early age. Maybe he plays sports at school, and he knows that he wants to be strong to do well as an athlete. Kudos to his parents for allowing him to put this setup on their back patio area. The only downside is that this takes up a lot of space that would normally be used for barbecues and outdoor parties. Outdoor living space is really valuable right now. It was especially valuable during the pandemic when people were having more outdoor parties to cut down on sharing germs. But this kid is really resourceful. He knows that he can’t afford to completely renovate his parents house for a gym. So he is making the most out of what he can afford at his age.

The Best Gym Buddies

One of the best parts of working from home is that you get to be around your pets. They love to keep you company, even if they’re just taking a nap next to you in silence. So obviously, one of the best parts of having a home gym is that you get to be around your cats and dogs while you get your workout done. The only downside is that they can’t be your spotters. There are a couple different photos on Reddit of people showing their pets hanging out in their home gyms. So we decided to just put a couple together here. We wonder what the animals think of their humans while they watch them lift heavy things over and over again.

Putting It All On The Line To Get In Shape

Sometimes, our lifestyles are literally killing us. This person on Reddit was vulnerable enough to share his truth. He said, “My health has been really bad lately. I’m 293 pounds and 24 years old. Quit my minimum wage job so I can focus on my health. I am 68 days sober from a major alcohol addiction of 5+ years of binge drinking every day. And I’m 35 days sober from marijuana. Spent all the remaining money I had on this setup.” It takes a lot to have that kind of dedication to bettering yourself. We wonder why he felt the need to quit his job though. Maybe it was something unhealthy that was hurting his chances of losing weight, like working at a fast food restaurant. Either way, we wish this man good luck and we truly hope that he can lose the weight.

This Guy Made His Own Weight Set Out of Scrap Metal

Buying your own weight sets can be expensive. It costs on average around $300 to $400 for a basic set of weights, and that doesn’t even count the cost of the bar and the bench. And it would cost even more if you wanted a large variety of dumbbells in various sizes like you find at a professional gym. So this man on Reddit had the great idea of making his own weights out of scrap metal. Obviously, not everyone can do this, because they simply don’t have the skill set to do so. But he used his skills to his advantage and was able to save a few hundred or even $1,000 making these weights for his home gym.

The Cat Gets a Gym, Too

Earlier on this list we showed photographs of pets hanging out at the home gym. But what about giving them their own gym? This person decided to make their cat a miniature gym just for them. It’s so adorable, and also very silly. Here at Home Addict, we have an entire list of indoor activities that you can try with your pets to help alleviate boredom. Quarantine showed us how boring it can be to be stuck at home. So it only makes sense that we are more sensitive to how our pets feel when they are left behind while we go to work. The cat deserves a gym, too!

The Danger of a Basement Gym

This is the only issue with having a basement gym. Someone posted on Reddit showing that their basement gym got completely flooded. If you live below the water table, there is always the chance that your basement might flood. It has happened at my house more than once over the years, because we are near a lake. And New Jersey is on the East coast, so we are more prone to be hit by hurricanes. When you live below the water table, it’s just something you have to be aware of. It’s still a shame that this person has damaged gym equipment now. Hopefully when they get the water drained, they can still salvage some of the equipment and use it in the future.

One Epic 2020 Quarantine Project

During the quarantine of 2020, people were stuck in their homes and had a lot of time on their hands. We love the image gallery of this home gym build. It proves that you don’t even need a lot of land to accomplish making an extension to your living space. This guy took a very small patch of side lawn that once held a greenhouse, and built an entire gym extension to his home. He said on Reddit, “Literally built my very own gym from the ground up after 2 months of quarantine of 2020 since all the gyms were closed!” He worked from May to June and took almost 4 weeks to build this. The equipment was purchased through different places like Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and Amazon.

The Master Bedroom Home Gym

Here on Home Addict, we have already posted Zillow Gone Wild and Ridiculous Real Estate. Both of those lists include photographs of people’s homes with strange things when they decided to list their house for sale. This master bedroom gym would qualify for being on one of these lists. These people didn’t have any space for their workout equipment anywhere else in the house. So they decided to take advantage of the huge bedroom that they owned. In the caption of the photograph on Reddit, they say that they are trying to sell the house. Now the real estate agent has to figure out what to do with this.

Credit: Reddit

A Suburban Home Gym Dream

This home gym setup looks so pretty, it almost doesn’t seem real. We especially love the television hanging on the wall playing a YouTube video featuring Marques Brownlee. So this guy is clearly a tech nerd, and he made sure to make a gym that reflected that. The black interior is very sleek, and it gives it a very cave-like vibe. And since it’s in the garage, they can open the door to get some air coming in on a nice day. This is an example of a garage home gym conversion that a lot of people would aspire to have.

Living Room Gym With An Epic View

There are some people out there who don’t actually use their living room space. Or, they might be blessed enough to have both a living room and a family room if the house is big enough. So you basically have two rooms that serve the same function. This person decided to take their unused living room and turn it into a home gym. Since they have an amazing view from the living room, it means that they get to watch the sunrise every morning during their workout. This reminds me of the sunset photo we saw earlier on the list. But this one has the benefit of staying indoors in a temperature control environment and still getting to enjoy the sunrise.

A Great Way to Rehab Used Gym Equipment

As the caption says, “7 gallons of vinegar and 3 cans of Rust-Oleum later…” What a transformation! it’s hard to believe that these are the same weights that they were before. Most people would never even think to try restoring rusty weights like this. Think about how many of these have ended up in metal scrap yards from people who didn’t realize they could fix it. This is a great idea if you are on a very tight budget, and you find used gym equipment on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace. By using vinegar and Rust-Oleum, you can get similar results. Speaking of vinegar, check out our article on some natural cleaning hacks.

Scrapped From a Metal Yard, Painted Into Works of Art

In the last post, we saw how someone used vinegar and Rust-Oleum to clean off their used weights. This guy went one step further and visited a local scrap metal yard to find these abandoned weights. Once he gathered all of his materials, he cleaned them off and then painted them into amazing works of art. One set of weights is Marvel themed and features several superheroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther and The Hulk. The other set is Dunkin’ Donuts themed, which is ironic, considering that the whole point in working out is to get fit. If you’re lifting weights like that everyday, it’s okay to treat yourself to some Dunkin every once in a while. Click here if you want to see the full image gallery of these weights.

From Super Obese to Fit

Here is yet another inspiring story from someone who needed to lose weight in order to get back to a healthy life. This man used his home gym as a way to lose over 100 lb. They said, “One year ago I was termed super-obese (obese with super powers?) and installed a wall rack. I had a lot to learn. A year later, this has become a lifestyle and I’m now down 105 pounds. Can’t imagine not having my home gym as my escape/therapy/motivation. This is the way.” Wow, we’re so proud of this guy, even though we don’t know him.

Spare Bedroom Transformation

Not every house has a basement or a garage where it’s possible to have a home gym. But this person used their second bedroom as space for their weights. This works for people who live in a small space and they don’t have the option to build out an entire gym. You could even do this in an apartment, if you were paying rent on a second bedroom that you’re not actually using. Obviously, the only downside to this is that you don’t have a bed for guests anymore. It seems forcing your guests to sleep on the couch is worth getting in shape.

Credit: Reddit

Home Gym and Theater Combo

This one is really cool, because they have combined both a home theater and gym into their basement. There is a large projector screen on the wall plus a couch where people can sit to watch movies. This would also be great for you to put on something to watch while you’re working out. A lot of people will have a TV hanging on the wall, but this is even better. Talk about making the most of your space! It’s a functional home gym, but it’s also a livable and stylish space. Kudos to them for blending the two together seamlessly.

It Took 5 Years of Collecting To Create This Home Gym

A lot of these home gyms look amazing, but we don’t really think about the time and money that it costs to do something like this. Some people have shared that it cost them tens of thousands of dollars to transform their space into a workout room. But this guy on Reddit shared that it took him an entire 5 years to get his home gym to a place where he felt proud enough to post pictures online. He said, “It’s taken me 5 years amassing equipment, and a few months doing weekend sheetrock and finishing as I’ve had time. But it’s finally done! Now to get back to work after a few months of not having it put together!”

Credit: Reddit

The DIY Strongman Log

I’m seriously blown away by the talent some people have. This guy took a log that he probably got for free in his backyard, and turned it into a DIY strongman log. If you look at the original Reddit post, you can see an image gallery of the before, during, and after of the process it took to make this. Strongman logs cost hundreds of dollars to buy from a store. So this guy got a great deal by making it for free, with just a little bit of labor and sweat equity. Not everyone would have the carpentry skills to pull this off, but this guy is obviously proud of his creation.

From Basement Bar and Game Room to Epic Workout Setup

A lot of people dream of the idea of having a basement bar and game room. However, you can only play foosball so many times before it gets boring. And if your kids have grown up and gotten older, it’s probably just collecting dust. During the pandemic, who are you going to invite over for drinks in that home bar? This guy decided that it was time to transform the basement into a home workout studio. The result is amazing. It is a home gym that looks incredibly professional, and I’m sure they got the most out of it during quarantine.

Best Thrift Haul Ever

Thrift shopping is amazing, because you can find expensive things for an incredibly low price. Someone posted on the home gym subreddit that they were able to find these weights at Goodwill. In the comment section, someone shared that they were very jealous, because they spent over $500 on new weights and a bar. So this guy basically got at least $300 worth of weights out of Goodwill for an undisclosed amount of money. Knowing Goodwill though, they probably only charged something like $5 per weight, or even less. They probably wouldn’t want to keep around something so heavy for very long. This guy seriously got a great thrift haul.

This Guy Spent $50,000 To Get His Perfect Home Gym

One of the only reasons why a lot of people can’t install a home gym is that it’s simply too expensive. Not only do you need to be a homeowner, but your house has to be big enough to fit a gym. And you need the money to do the renovations. This person on Reddit shared that they spent a whopping $50,000 in order to get the perfect home gym of their dreams. Obviously, you can have a much cheaper version in your own home. Heck, even buying a $2,500 Peloton bike and putting it in your bedroom would be cheaper than this. But it makes sense, considering that he would have to put up new insulation, drywall, flooring, and buy thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

This Rusty Rack From Facebook Marketplace Looks Just Like New

Here is another inspiring post of someone who found a rusty rack on Facebook Marketplace and transformed it to look brand new. Like we mentioned earlier in the wright transformation photo, you would need to use vinegar and Rust-Oleum to fix this issue. He also repainted it so that it looked brand new. This guy never disclosed how much he spent on the rack, but we can only assume that he got a really good discount. He may have saved hundreds of dollars by getting something used and giving it a little bit of TLC. Now, this looks good as new, and he’s ready to start working out at home.

The Dwight Schrute Gym is Appropriately in a Barn

In case you didn’t know, Dwight Schrute is a character from the TV show called The Office. He works at a paper company full-time, but also runs a beet farm. So there are several episodes where we see Dwight in the barn on his property. He also seems ridiculously strong, and knows martial arts. So it’s actually very funny and fitting that this person decided to name their home gym after him. The fact that it seems to be inside of a large barn makes it all the more appropriate. As an added bonus, he was able to save some money on his equipment. He wrote, “I got the rack used for a hundred bucks and painted it with black enamel. The dumbbells are 10-100 in 10 lb increments. I bought them new from body solid for 2 bucks a pounds, only because I couldn’t find a complete set used.”

Credit: Reddit

Sleek, Black Gym

This is one of the most stylish home gyms on the entire list. The entire room has been painted black, and he has wooden accents throughout the space. It gives you this isolated cozy feeling, and I’m sure he feels like he can escape the rest of the world while he does his workouts. This guy has really good taste. I’m getting Japandi vibes from the wood that is behind the tv, and he also has a neon sign with a faux living garden wall to add some extra style. With a space like this, you might never want to leave. if you want to see a full image gallery with more photos of this gym, click here.

Credit: Reddit

HomeMade Wooden Leg Press

I’m seriously blown away by the skills that some people have. This guy must be a master carpenter, because he was able to build a homemade leg press out of wood. Leg press machines like this cost anywhere from $3,000 to $6,000. So even if this guy spent a couple hundred dollars on wood materials, he still made out like a bandit. Someone in the comment section suggested that the guy should start selling these for $1,000 each. People would probably buy them. However, some people were also questioning if this would actually stand the test of time, since it’s made of wood rather than metal. Only time will tell.

This Woman Surprised Her Husband With a Home Gym

This is so sweet and romantic. A woman posted this photo on Reddit explaining that she surprised her husband with a garage gym for his birthday. She spent several months quietly collecting used gear. And she also spent a lot of money buying brand new gear like the rack and the horizontal shelves. She took photos of her process and turned it into a time lapse. This photo was just posted on Reddit to say thank you to the community for all the advice they had given her about building the gym for her husband. It is so sweet, and not many people would go above and beyond for their partner like this.

Credit: Reddit

Rooftop Gym

This is really unique, because you don’t see a rooftop gym every day. On the original Reddit post, the caption said, “Moved house and took the opportunity to move the gym up to the roof. Had to swap in for a free standing version instead of wall mounted. Added a pulley system too for some added variety. Only issue is nowhere to lock knees for the lateral pull-down.” The benefit to having this gym is that you get tons of fresh air, and you have a view of the sunrise or sunset. However, it’s bad in the winter time, or during a bad storm.

Credit: Reddit

Gym in a Loft

Normally, it would be a disappointment that someone used a beautiful loft like this for something like a gym. But in this case, they did a wonderful job. You can tell that this loft was once used as a guest bedroom space. But it’s big enough to where you could even rent it out as a studio apartment. It also has its own bathroom and shower space for you to clean up after a hard workout. The ceilings of this room are made of beautiful wood paneling, and there are lots of windows for natural light in the room. If you had a space like this in my house, you would want to be working out every single day. Seriously jealous over here.

Credit: Reddit

A Very Unique Attic Gym

Last but not least is the person who decided to put a gym in their attic. This must have been the only place where they would have had the space to put their equipment. However, we wouldn’t recommend doing this, because it’s probably not temperature controlled. In the photo, you can see that there is no insulation on the ceiling. At my house, the attic is freezing in the winter time and sweltering hot in the summertime. Sometimes the temperature there is actually worse than what it feels like outside. So we can’t imagine that this person could actually work out here comfortably for very long.
