Have you ever been mistaken for someone else? It can be a little embarrassing, right? Well, imagine how much more awkward it would be if the person mistaking you for someone else is actually talking to your identical twin! As a twin, you know that it’s not uncommon to be confused with your sibling, but sometimes the mix-up can lead to some truly wild and hilarious situations. In this article, we’re diving into some of the most outrageous stories of mistaken identity involving identical twins. From accidental dates to cases of mistaken identity in the workplace, these stories will have you doing a double-take yourself!
My friend has an identical twin, and they did a talent show. His twin doesn’t go to our school, so no one was aware he had a twin except a few of us. He proceed to do a magic trick, in which he would escape being tied up completely and put into a black box. The lovely assistant tied him up with ropes, chains, and padlocks to the point where he couldn’t move at all. He was then placed in the box and given 5 minutes to escape. After 5 minutes, his twin appeared on the balcony above, and everyone lost their sh*t. Took him 30 minutes with help to actually get out of the chains afterwords.
My parents have a friend who is an identical twin. Several years ago he and his wife were in the process of adopting two children through a private agency. Things were going well and the adoption date was set, but about two weeks before it was supposed to be finalized the couple got a phone call from the agency stating there was a problem. One of the people working on their case claimed they had seen the husband out with another woman and the agency would not adopt the kids into an unstable home. Turns out, the husband’s twin and sister-in-law had been in town visiting and happened to go shopping and been seen kissing his wife. The agency knew the guy had a brother, but not that he was a twin. He and his wife had to go into the agency with my parents’ friends to prove they weren’t lying.
When we were in the 6th grade, my brother decided he wanted to stay at home because he wasn’t feeling well. So far, there had never been a day where only one of us was at school but I didn’t think anything of it. I was walking down the hall and all of a sudden I was pulled in by a teacher who I had never seen before and she started yelling at me (and I mean yelling at me) because I had skipped her class and I had the audacity to walk in front of her class right after. It was really awkward to just say, “Uhh, I have an identical twin brother… My name is JSweat”. She, of course, thought I was making a terrible excuse and I had to go get another teacher that knew I had a brother to come tell her that I was telling the truth. She never bothered me again!
When I was dating my wife, she and her twin sister had a bunch of friends over. I walked over to her and put my arm around her and she leaned into it. I leaned in for a kiss but then she pulled away. I thought, well maybe she’s not comfortable with a little peck in front of our friends since we hadn’t been dating for too long. Then I scanned the room and made contact with my girlfriend. I looked back in awe that I had my arm around her sister (who was messing with me until things went too far). I then tucked my tail between my legs, walked over to my girlfriend, put my arm around her and said, “well, will you give me a kiss?”
My twin brother and I went to different colleges and didn’t generally reveal to the friends we made that we each had a twin. One day a group of people approached me in the street, calling me by my brother’s name and asking me if I would like to join them in the pub. I knew that my twin brother was already at the pub so I said I’d bet them free drinks if I beat them to the pub in a foot race, even if I gave them a headstart. They agreed and ran off at top speed while I stood there casually checking my watch and buffing my fingernails on my lapel, only for them to arrive exhausted, and find ‘me’ standing at the bar, drink already in hand.
I know it’s not exactly an achievement, but it was a fond fun twin moment.
My brother and I went to the same college. On one occasion we both went to the library- I was studying, and he was meeting a classmate for a project. She ran into me instead and I pretended to be my brother. When it got old I went looking for him but couldn’t find him, so I took off my jacket and came back to the girl. I introduced myself and explained that my brother was her classmate, and I was looking for him. She said he had just left. I walked away, put the jacket on, and came back. She said my brother was looking for me.
I kept leaving and coming back several times until eventually my brother finally arrived. When she saw him, wearing something totally different that what I had worn with or without the jacket, she freaked out and yelled, “THERE ARE THREE OF YOU!?!”
A while back when I was in middle school I went over to one of my good friend’s house. His mom comes in, we start talking about random stuff, and then she asks my name… I had known this woman for 5-6 years at this point so I was pretty d*mn confused. The conversation continues for a very awkward minute or two, and then my friend’s mom walked in.
Well, one time on the first day of high school I made a new friend. Spent half the day chatting with him and we got along well.
Saw him later the day and went and sat with him and his primary school friends and he hardly even acknowledged me, and just gave me a weird look when I brought up something that happened earlier
My twin brother was President of the class and I was Vice President in our Junior Year. When it came time for after-school re-election speeches for senior year, my brother completely forgot and walked home. I did my speech for Vice President, then borrowed a friend’s shirt and made up a Presidential speech for him on the spot. We both won 🙂
My twin and I have swapped places successfully in many situations but the most recent was probably the best. My brother is an adjunct professor at a local university teaching web design. None of his students knew he had a twin. On April 1st, I came in to open the class instead of him. I casually said “hi” to about 20 students, discussed questions about a project (making it up as I went) and even discussed a student’s grade before opening the lesson. No one noticed anything out of the ordinary. About 5 minutes into this, my brother threw open the classroom door and stepped in. He pointed to me and said, “Who is this imposter?!” We didn’t know how they would react but we thought it would be a lot louder. Instead, most of the student’s mouths dropped open and they just stared back and forth in complete confusion and terror in a few cases. Finally, I broke in and said that I was teaching my class, as usual, and who was this guy interrupting? He dashed up to the front and said it was his class and I should leave. We then asked the students whose class it was and about half got it right for bonus points and half got it wrong. Either way, we clearly made their day and we haven’t been able to play this trick again for the past few years because it still gets talked about.
My twin brother and I go to different colleges. I knew he was coming up to visit a couple of weeks after college started, so I didn’t tell any of my new friends I had a twin and didn’t friend anyone on social media or anything. When he came up to visit, he came right to my room. And we switched for about an hour. It was great. He said he had an in-depth conversation about the fantasy football league I was in, just using cues he found in the conversation. Nobody had any idea. Wanna real mess with a group of people? Pull a good twin switch. The reveal was awesome. He was having dinner in the dining hall with my friends, I sat down at a nearby table. The looks of disbelief on people’s faces were unbelievable. This one guy looked at him, looked at me, looked at him, looked at me. Speechless. God, I love being a twin
My twin brother recommended a restaurant to me. Said that he and his wife went there all the time, good food, and really friendly staff…
So I took my wife there. The food was as advertised, but the service… somewhere between cold and openly hostile. Like they resented our presence. I was puzzled by the contrast between what I’d heard and what I saw.
Suddenly from the front of the restaurant, explosion of laughter, and much rapid talking, suddenly the waitress is there, smiling and all… just as my brother and his wife walk around the corner.
They thought my brother was cheating on his wife with some blonde… Yeah, it’s funny now.
I went to a party once, and my bald identical twin bro had yet to arrive. His girlfriend was already there, so I gave her the obligatory friendly hug, and then sat on the other side of the room to hang out.
This other guy, a mutual friend of his and hers, kept staring at me, then staring at her, with this real nervous look on his mug. For about fifteen minutes, every so often, this guy would look around nervously and then furiously text on his phone.
Then my brother arrives. He kisses his girlfriend and says hi to everyone, and this guy blows up.
“JESUS WAS NO ONE GOING TO SAY ANYTHING? WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT? I THOUGHT HE GREW A FULL HEAD OF HAIR IN A DAY.”
My mom taught in middle school for a while. There were two girls who were identical twins. The teachers eventually discovered that, during lunch, the two would ‘swap’
Turned out, one liked math and the other liked reading, so they would swap so that they didn’t have to take the class they didn’t like.
Pretty clever. My older sister is about to have twins. If they’re identical, I plan on helping them do this kind of stuff
I’m an identical twin. This is a case of someone assuming my twin was me, though.
For some background, I used to work at a place with an extremely tight-knit, friendly work culture. It was not unusual to have folks go out for drinks after work and have 20 or 30 people show up.
Anyway, one day one of my co-workers pulled me aside and asked “Hey, I just wanted to check but is everything okay with you and Kerri? (Kerri is the woman I had just gotten married to at the time, and am still happily married to now).
I answered, “Yeah, as far as I know, what are you talking about?”
They answered “Don’t b*llsh*t me. A bunch of us saw you last night…”
I replied “What on earth are you talking about? All we did last night is stay in and drink beer and watch Netflix.”
“We saw you with your arm around that blonde lady at the Fox and Hound last night. If you’re going to cheat, why on earth would you do it THERE?”
After a little bit of back and forth, it became clear that a large contingent of my coworkers had seen my identical twin mackin’ it with some woman at the bar that was our most common hangout. I had to get my brother out with all of them once just to convince them that I actually had a twin.
From then on, I made an effort to mention that I had a twin around new coworkers, just so that, at the very least, they wouldn’t just assume I was an a**hole if I didn’t acknowledge them when out on the town.
My brother and I worked together for about 4 yrs in retail. We would often get scheduled wrong and got so many “you are in two places at once” comments. The most awkward thing I can recall that happened was I got yelled at by a customer (I ran the register and he ran the floor) for something my brother did. The customer laid into me and I watch my brother appear from around a corner and he came by and asked the customer to lay off me and he’d help her. The customer profusely apologized before following him.
I was walking to my car one day after classes when I was in college when this girl comes marching up to me angry as all h*ll and asked why I didn’t call her back after “our wonderful night together”. Turns out, she and my twin had a one-night stand and he ghosted her afterwards.
I have an identical twin brother. I am straight and dating a girl while he’s gay and dating a guy.
One day, my brother and I decided to wear the same outfit for laughs. Before class, I was facing my locker and my twin brother’s boyfriend came up from behind and gave me a big bear hug. I was creeped out and turned around only to see that it was him.
If you’re a twin, you’re bound to eventually have a few embarrassing stories. My whole life has been a system of awkward hugs or ducking a kiss from a girl and yelling, “Wrong one! Wrong one!” Brother’s girlfriend jumps in your lap while you’re watching a movie? It happens.
My personal favorite has to do with situations that have occurred due to mistaken identity with my brother now that he’s a marine officer. I joined the Peace Corps shortly after he became an officer (yea, we’re a sitcom setup), and worked as a teacher in Eastern Europe. Over drinks at a dinner during my service with friends of my host family, one of the gentlemen tells me that he used to be a Soviet helicopter pilot and asks me if I’d like to see his uniform. He brings down the full outfit in all its medaled glory. We’re almost exactly the same size, and he lets me try it on. Thinking how cool this is, I post a picture online wearing it to show everyone.
My brother calls me a few days later pissed as all h*ll because, during his screening for a security clearance, someone finds pictures of him wearing perfectly tailored soviet regalia. He yells at me for getting brass up his ass and complains that he might get his clearance postponed. We still laugh about it.
I do have a twin sister. I’m a guy. We both have names that start with B. This was about 5 years ago.
She had a few hot friends in high school and they would always come around the house and hang out. If I was there, I would always joke around with them or playfully flirt with them. Nothing crazy.
However, one of her friends was always a little bit more flirtatious with me than any of the others. Never thought anything of it until I received a text from her one day out of the blue. “Wanna chill tonight?” I was so taken aback that I really didn’t know what to do. Did my sister know her friend had asked me to hang out? Should I tell my sister?
I texted her friend back still a bit surprised but curious. “This is kind of unexpected. What would you wanna do?” She answered, “Just need to get a few things off my chest. You going to be home at 7. I can just head over then?”
Me: “Yeah that’s fine. I should be home. What brought this on so suddenly?” Her: “You know. Just a lot of feelings and sh*t” Me: “Okay well just text me when you’re here =)”
My heart is racing at this point and I decided I’d see how things went that night and talk to my sister later. So I’m waiting for her to get there and then all of a sudden I hear her downstairs. I head down the steps to go get her and she’s talking to my dad. He walks back to the living room, I say hey and ask her how she is and all that and say we can head out back to talk. She asks if everything is all right? I, a little confused, then asked what made her want to hang out tonight and why she waited so long. She gets all red and opens her phone real quick and quickly realizes what happened.
My friend is the wild twin and the brother is very laid back. I live in a big town of 100,000+ people with plenty of pubs and clubs. My friend ended up getting barred from most of them over a period of a few months and then started drinking out of town, his twin didn’t know how bad it was until he was out. One night with his wife and the bouncers let him in anywhere, much to his wife’s fury. Twin tried to tell the bouncers it was not me, it was my twin. Didn’t work at all
Eventually settled when he rang his brother, made him come into town and go round every bar to the bouncers and prove he wasn’t the banned twin.
They took note of his ID, kept the ban on for my pal and let his twin go on enjoying his night. One bouncer joked with them both and said he has heard that story hundreds of times and never thought he would see the day it was true!
My uncle is really good friends with a man whose twin brother is a very successful pro golfer.
One day my uncle gets on a plane to find that his seat is right next to his friend (they weren’t planning a trip together or anything, it was pure coincidence) but he got his hat pulled way down trying to cover his face. Naturally, my uncle was like “hey friend! What are the odds of us being on the same plane. Isn’t that cool?” And his friend just was like “haha yeah, I appreciate it, but I’m just trying to get where I’m going.” My uncle thought it was weird but eventually realizes “oh hey, you’re not (friend) you’re (famous golfer) aren’t you?” And he was like “oh? You thought I was my brother? I thought you were just a golf fan and I didn’t want a bunch of people noticing me and swarming for an autograph, sorry I was so rude!”
When my uncle got back and told his friend, his friend said “He’s probably not used to people thinking he’s me, I get recognized as him by golf fans all the time.”
Identical twin here. My brother and I hung out at an Internet cafe quite a bit when we were in HS. One day, a friend within our circle asked to speak to me on the phone because she thought I was cute and wanted to get to know me more. Of course, I had always thought better of myself than I actually was, so I naturally accepted this opportunity. However, the conversation got more weird and awkward as we both could not relate to what each other was saying or describing.
Then she asked me: “wait, were you the one wearing black?” To which I responded, “uhh no. That’d be my brother”. And she quickly closed our conversation by saying: “oh I’m sorry, I thought your brother was the cute one. Can you hand the phone to him please”?
I was both slightly insulted for not being cute and messed with 🙁
I was in a play in college and my brother was supportive enough to come to one of the performances with some other family members.
The stage manager saw him and came up to say “TheGingernational, what are you doing in the lobby? You’re supposed to be in the green room.” To which he responded: “Oh my god, I forgot all my lines!”
She then remembered that I have an identical twin.
I’m an identical twin – lots of awkward things happened throughout our lives – my brother and I are pretty identical, apparently.
We went our separate ways after high school, he went to a different uni in a different state in a completely different field of study from I.
So after high school, all our friends and circles were completely different. This is important.
We never really told our friends we had a twin or were twins, it doesn’t really come up in conversation.
So on his wedding day, we were constantly getting mixed up by guests who didn’t know – but the most awkward moment was a day before the wedding. He got married in a different state so we all had to go up to attend his wedding. I was with my then girlfriend/fiance, walking around this foreign town in one of their shopping centres when I was suddenly stopped by a complete stranger. She said, “OMG, John (my brother’s name, that’s not his real name, just an example), who is this woman? Is the wedding still on?” She was staring daggers at me and my fiance, and it took me a few seconds before it dawned on me what I should say.
Much hilarity ensued before I had to call my brother and tell him that his wife better calls her bridesmaid and tell her that the wedding is still on!
My brother and I both entered the science fair. Before the awards ceremony, he got sick, so I went with just my mom. My brother won first place and I didn’t place at all. When they called his name, my mom made me go up for him. I stood on a stage, looking out at the sea of friends and teachers clapping for me while a medal was hung over my shoulders and a certificate was shoved into my hands. At that moment, I should have felt proud of my brother, but instead, I just started crying on stage and weirded everybody out. I think they must have thought I was just overwhelmed with happiness because even when I stepped off of the stage and made a beeline for the back door, people continued to congratulate me and try to shake my hand. “Congratulations, (my twin’s name)!” It was such a bizarre emotion. Like a blend of jealousy and shame. I walked straight to the back, passed my mom, and left.
My brother and I are now 25, but in middle school being a twin was funny/embarrassing. We are one of the sets of twins who look exactly alike, get the same haircut and even our voices sound the same.
In 7th grade, I was minding my own business in class when someone joked that I wasn’t myself. Immediately everyone in the classroom and the teacher decided to investigate. Although I had all my papers with me and all my belongings they came to the conclusion that we could have switched them.
So these Harvard-educated teachers did what they thought was best. They grabbed my brother from his classroom (across the hall) and started comparing us, trying to make sure we were who we said we were. After numerous times of us assuring them we were in the right class, I couldn’t help but laugh some. After my laugh people in the classrooms started to laugh and come out into the hallway with us. The teachers found this amusing that nobody knew who we were and now 50+ students are in the hallway trying to tell them who I was and was not.
Needless to say, this ended with both of us in the assistant principal’s office with a stern warning to not switch courses, even though we were in the right class. Thinking back, what a bunch of morons.
My dad was trying to apply for an organization at his University. He was going through the application process but when it came to the interview, he became extremely nervous and then decided to ask his brother to go in his stead.
So, his brother walks in and the interview starts. The people are asking him questions about this clueless man. He has no idea who the people interviewing him are which absolutely infuriated them since it was absolutely required to know the names of the members. All the while, everyone thought he was just playing dumb.
After the interview, my dad arrives and admits that he sent his twin to the interview. The interviewees asked him why he did it and said he was too scared to go. That was the first and last time he ever exploited his twin status.
In elementary school, I was a little rascal, which gave me a reputation among the teachers. However, one of my teachers really thought there was something wrong with me.
Queue my brother: quiet, shy, timid. My teacher would see HIM in the hallway, and he would never acknowledge her. I would say hi, and greet her, so there was a big difference.
She comes to the assumption that I have a split personality, and because we wore the same clothes, she ruled out that it was a twin.
After a parent-teacher meeting, she finally approached my mother after the teachers had left, with me by her side. She could not see my brother and told my mother she believed I had a split personality. At this point, my brother steps into view and my mother tells her there are two of us.
I learned all of this from my mother, but she says that the look on that teacher’s face was priceless.
Just a few years ago my dad fell off a ladder removing Christmas lights and broke his shoulder. After surgery, Dad had to go to physical therapy for a while. A few months in, my uncle comes up from out of town for some reason I can’t remember and Dad hatches a plan to be miraculously healed. He tells my uncle all the names of his receptionists and therapist. He wanted me to go in and film it, but I was afraid it would ruin the joke.
So I’m told that my uncle goes in and starts going through stretches while the therapist looks amazed. She says, “My word I’ve never seen such quick improvement. I never thought you would be able to lift your arm over your head again! What changed since the last session?” My dad’s family are a bunch of wise asses, so my uncle starts telling the therapist about hearing of a home remedy by rubbing ostrich oil on his shoulder.
Meanwhile, my dad goes up to the receptionist for his appointment and apologizes for being late. The lady just looks confused and says, “But you already came in.” My dad just looks confused back at her as she takes him to his room. I was told that the therapist gasped and took a triple-take when she saw them both.
So, I know these two twin guys, and one of them happens to be gay and is going out with someone. He neglected to tell his brother either of these facts, as well as never told his boyfriend he was a twin as well.
Anyway, one day, the straight twin and I are walking through the mall and this guy comes up to my friend and says something like “Hey sweetie, how’s it going?” And then just full on kisses my friend. My friend almost punched the guy, but luckily realized he was being mistaken for his twin. He explained that he was not in fact his twin and the guy literally looked like he was going to die from embarrassment at this realization. My friend and I assured him it was okay and that it was an honest mistake. We all laughed about it after.
When my friend got home, he found his brother and, after taking him to a quiet, secluded room (cause he wasn’t sure if anyone else knew yet), he told him the story of that day and asked him if he was gay. He confirmed it and they ended up having a good bro moment out of it.
What’s even better is that this situation made them really close as brothers, whereas before, they could barely stand being in the same room with each other.
I was a teenager, walking to the parking lot from my friend’s place. I walked past McDonald’s, and hear someone yell at me “hey! hey! (my twin bro’s name)” a few times, I turn around. This beautiful girl came close, told me that she love me (my twin bro) goes on and on. I was just so amused that somebody just told me that “I love you” I’m the silent one and my twin bro ain’t. He’s good with ladies. Moments later, I recovered from the shock and awe, crashed back to the ground and said: Sorry, but I am not “twin bro’s name”, he’s my identical twin brother and I am (my name). That moment, when she realized that she told me lots of things to me, probably took time to get the courage to say it out loud… It was heartbreaking, She just stood there, watching me in a confused state, laughed, and then burst into full cry. I did not have even time to tell her that I can give her his number and his just close by. But no, she turned away, started running like a madman and yelled to her friends, “he was the wrong one, he was the wrong one” and cried along her way back.
And I just stood there, thinking what the heck happened. I bet if she reads this, she will remember it. She was of Israeli descent? living in northern Europe.
So sorry to you, I bet it did take time to recover from that. On a side note, my brother was pissed as h*ll cause of this mishap.
In middle school, I became friendly with a girl who was in a bunch of my classes. In early November I decided to invite her to my birthday, and she said “awesome! We’d love to go!”
And I’m thinking, “we?”
Well turns out I had befriended both her and her sister, and I didn’t even know it. I had different classes on different days, and they were never in the same class together.
I don’t know how I didn’t call the other twin the wrong name before that point though lol
Here’s a story that still makes me feel terrible 20 years later. When I was 12 this new kid joined my class. We got into a fight over some stupid sh*t on his second day and he hit me, made a pretty good contact, and then booked it.
At the end of the day, I saw him on the way to the bus and I ran right at him and full force body checked him into a wall. He got cuts and grazes on his face and hands where he hit the wall and immediately started crying. Only at this point did I realise there was another version of him a few meters ahead.
Obviously, the ‘other version’ was the actual guy I’d had a fight with and this was his entirely innocent twin brother who, of course, had also just joined the school.
I felt incredibly awful and, in hindsight, it was a pretty cowardly attack even if it had been the right kid.
I got detention and a strong talking-to from the school but, to his credit, the brother I’d actually meant to attack defended me to the school and said it was partially his fault for starting trouble earlier in the day.
I did end up being pretty good friends with both of them for a few years until we went to different 6th forms.
When I attended my identical twin brother’s wedding engagement, I showed up late. It was a group of about 100 heavily buzzed folks, mostly the bride’s side of the family all having a good time. I had been away for 6 months and had not met any of the in-laws yet, so I had no clue who anybody was, but they knew that I existed. They just had no clue how similar I look to my brother. So I walked into the crowded house and made my way to the bathroom, only to be stopped by a group of women who I had never seen previously. About 10 or so women stopped me and asked me “so…how did you propose to her? They looked at me and addressed me with a familiar tone like we had already met. At first, I was surprised at the question but realized what was happening. Of course! These drunk fools think I’m my brother! So, naturally, I decided to throw my brother under the bus for funsies. I replied back with a non-coherent response consisting of many “bros”, and “dudes” and kept saying “it was super romantic, dude”. “I got down on one knee and made our dreams come true..”. I had never before called an 82-year-old woman “dude” until that night. I quickly made my exit to the backyard, where the grilled meats and beer were assembled. I thought I had made a masterful ninja escape but alas, my sister-in-law later found out. That was probably the funniest twin scenario I’ve had so far.
I’ve had a beard since college. About the time my son is turning 5 years old, he starts asking what I look like without a beard and asking me to shave my beard. So for his 5th birthday, I surprise him by shaving off the beard the night before his big day. The morning of his birthday he comes running into our bedroom and stops dead in his tracks halfway between the doorway and the bed. he says “Mom, what are you doing in bed with uncle Tim!”
So this one is kind of bad, but I was dating an identical twin and we had both just moved to New York City (his brother had lived there for a few years already). We’re walking through The Strand that big bookstore down by Union Square when this guy comes up to him and starts thanking him for the awesome night and how he’ll definitely refer his other friends to him and so on, and we sit there bewildered as the man went on and on before finally putting it together – we realized his twin brother was a gay escort in NYC.
My best man at my wedding was my cousin, who has an identical twin brother. Halfway through the ceremony, my best man started feeling faint so he had to go sit down. As it neared the time for exchanging rings, I noticed he had made his way back up, but as I turned to get the ring, it wasn’t him. Thankfully, I had made his twin brother an usher so they were wearing the same tux and decided to make the switch. Nobody noticed except for close family members. I wish I had planned it that way.
My two friends are twins (one boy and one girl) we rented a house in Wildwood NJ after our senior prom. The girl twin brought her bf and the boy twin brought his GF. Me and the boy twin were sitting on the couch of the house when the girl twins bf came home from a run leaned over the couch and gave the boy twin a kiss hello. He didn’t realize what happened until he stood up. It was hysterical to me because the twins resemble each other but not enough to make that mistake.
